HC Deb 13 May 1914 vol 62 c1096
54. Mr. J. WARD

asked the Secretary of State for War whether Private Allen J. Cole, of the 12th Lancers, was shot dead by Lance-Corporal Whelan, of the same regiment, while the regiment was at Harwich; whether the relatives of the deceased were telegraphed for without being informed of the nature and result of his injuries; what were the terms of the verdict; how does Lance-Corporal Whelan explain his having in his possession ball cartridges contrary to regulations; whether the Press were invited to be present at the inquest; and, if so, were they requested to keep all reference to this case out of their journals?
