HC Deb 12 May 1914 vol 62 cc928-9
37 and 38. Mr. J. HOGGE

asked (1) whether any response had been made by the Local Government Board to a wireless message from St. Kilda asking for assistance in a case of medical urgency; and (2) when the resident nurse is likely to take-up her duties in St. Kilda?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The message referred to was transmitted by the recipient to the Local Government Board for Scotland, who stated in reply that the Highlands and Islands Medical Service Board were sending a nurse to St. Kilda by the first available steamer. It is intended that the nurse should proceed to St. Kilda by the steamship "Hebridean" on Monday next.

Dr. ADDISON

Is the nurse to be resident in the island?

Mr. MCKINNON WOOD

Yes, I think that is the intention.

Mr. F. WHYTE

Has my right hon. Friend assured himself that there will be permanent telegraphic communication with the island in future?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

That does not arise out of the question. That is a matter for the Postmaster-General.
