HC Deb 07 May 1914 vol 62 c429
38. Mr. F. HALL (Dulwich)

asked if any steps have yet been taken to give effect to the recommendation of the Post Office Staff Committee as to the creation of a class of probationer engineers from which assistant engineers would be recruited; and, in view of the uncertainty arising in the case of those already in the service who are affected by this recommendation, when a decision is likely to be come to in the matter?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The recommendations of the Select Committee that a class of engineer probationers should be created, from which assistant engineers would be recruited, has been accepted. Details of the scheme of examination for the new class are at present under consideration.

Mr. F. HALL

Will preferential treatment be given to present employés in the Post Office?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I do not think that arises out of the question. The whole subject of the probationer engineers is under consideration between my Department and the Treasury. I cannot say more at this moment.
