HC Deb 07 May 1914 vol 62 c432
41. Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in connection with the complaint against the Portland cement manufacturers, he is aware that at the Wickham Cement Works, Strood, there are 250 day workers receiving 5d. per hour and less; that the same thing applies at the White's Works, Swanscombe, as regards 296 men; and at Beven's Works, Northfleet, as regards 120 men; and that all the men referred to are between the ages of twenty and fifty, and that none of them are disabled; whether these facts were known before it was decided that the Fair-Wages Clause was not being violated; and whether he will cause further inquiry to be made and receive representations from the organisation of the men concerned?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

I will have further inquiry made in view of the information furnished by my hon. Friend.
