HC Deb 06 May 1914 vol 62 c274
42. Lord ALEXANDER THYNNE

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether the Government have made any inquiries into the conditions under which the men employed on new construction in the Port of London are housed; and whether the existing housing available in the vicinity of such works is suitable and adequate?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Inquiries are now being made.

Sir A. GRIFFITH-BOSCAWEN

Has any provision been made in the contract for housing the people employed?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I believe that no such provision has been made. The contract was made prior to the Act of Parliament, which requires such provision to be made in future contracts.
