HC Deb 06 May 1914 vol 62 cc261-2
31. Mr. BRIDGEMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many times the Civil Service Commissioners have sat to pass temporary clerks engaged in the Labour Exchange Unemployment Insurance Department for examination for permanent clerkships; how many clerks have come before them on each occasion; how many have been passed; and what was the last occasion upon which the Commissioners sat for this purpose?

Mr. ROBERTSON

The Civil Service Commissioners have sat on five occasions to interview applicants for appointment in the Labour Exchanges and Unemployment Insurance Service. The total number of temporary clerks interviewed was 1,791. The numbers interviewed on each occasion were two, 642, 147, 577 and 423, respectively. In all, 960 were passed by the Commissioners at the interviews, subject to passing the subsequent written qualifying examination. The last occasion upon which the Commissioners sat was in March, 1914.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Will the hon. Gentleman say how many passed on the last occasion?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I have only the number interviewed. I will try and get the figures.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I will put the question down on an early day.

Mr. HOARE

Are any now being appointed without an interview?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I am not aware of any.
