§ 9. Mr. ORMSBY-GOREasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the proposed new Grant to local education authorities in necessitous school areas will be shared by all local education authorities whose rate for all education purposes exceeds 1s. 6d. in the £, or whether it will be confined to those authorities which have already participated in the necessitous school areas Grant?
§ Mr. J. A. PEASEThe answer is in the affirmative, but I hope to have an opportunity in the course of the Debate to-day of giving fuller information than is possible within the limits of an answer to a question.
§ 11. Sir J. D. REESasked what relief will be afforded to Nottingham by the Grants proposed to local bodies under the Budget?
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELMy right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer promised to give the figures for Nottingham and these are now being prepared. I regret, however, that I cannot undertake to supply similar figures for other places generally. Calculations have been made with respect to a small number of typical localities, but the House will realise that in view of the variety of the present Grants, and the fact that the new Grants which will be made to Education, Poor Law, Public Health, and Road Authorities, need to be worked out on various bases of distribution, the calculations involved are necessarily laborious. The data at present available for the purpose of computation are incomplete, and estimates which are now being given can only be approximate.
