HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 cc24-5
43. LORD ALEXANDER THYNNE

asked the President of the Local Government Board what steps have been taken by the Government to ensure that the large number of men employed by the Port of London Authority on the construction of new docks are housed under suitable conditions?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

I would refer the Noble Lord to the reply given by my hon. Friend the Secretary to the Board of Trade to his question on this subject on 28th April. The Local Government Board have no-more power than the Board of Trade to compel housing accommodation to be specially provided for these men, but I am causing inquiry to be made into the conditions under which they are housed.

Lord A. THYNNE

Is it not the fact that the Government are represented on the Port of London Authority, and that the chairman of the Port Authority is nominated by the Board of Trade?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

That question should be addressed to the Board of Trade.
