HC Deb 02 July 1914 vol 64 c530
22. Mr. O'MALLEY

asked the Chief Secretary whether Mrs. Browne, of Rosleague, Letterfrack, Connemara, has offered her estate for purchase to the Congested Districts Board; if so, will he state whether she has lodged the maps necessary for inspection; and whether, in view of the fact that the tenants on this estate have refused to pay rent pending the purchase of the estate, he will urge upon the Congested Districts Board the desirability of an early purchase?

Mr. BIRRELL

Mrs. Browne has not offered for sale to the Congested Districts Board any of her estate at Rosleague, but an offer has been issued to her by the Board in respect of some untenanted land at Cleggan. As I have already stated the effect of illegal combinations against the payment of rent to the landlord pending the valuation of an estate will have the effect of delaying indefinitely instead of hastening the purchase of any estate on which these illegal practices prevail.
