§ 21. Mr. HORNERasked whether, in Ireland, clerks of the Crown and Peace, Crown solicitors, and Sessional Crown solicitors, whose public duties to the Crown are limited to counties, are at liberty to address public political meetings or take any public part in politics outside the county for which each is appointed?
§ Mr. BIRRELLClerks of the Crown and Peace being members of the permanent Civil Service of the State, are subject to the well-known, though unwritten, rule that Civil servants must refrain from taking an active part in politics. As regards Crown and Sessional Crown solicitors who are not Civil servants, there is no express rule prohibiting them from taking part in political matters, but it is generally understood that they should not do so within their own counties.
§ Mr. SWIFT MacNEILLDoes that rule apply to Crown prosecutors also?
