§ 64. Mr. PETOasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Swindon Corporation propose to introduce a Bill for the abandonment of the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal; and will he say whether the Board of Trade intend to take any steps to prevent the further dilapidation and abandonment of such waterways as exist in this country, particularly in view of the extended use of motor traction for conveyance of goods on canals?
§ Mr. R. C. LAMBERTIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the canal in question is derelict, and that it passes through a crowded part of Swindon, and the public health authority has long desired to put an end to the nuisance caused by it?
§ Mr. PETOIs the hon. Member entitled to make an argumentative and ex parte statement before I ask my question, and, if so, am I entitled to quote all the resolutions of the Wiltshire County Council, borough councils, and district councils who are in favour of opposing this measure?
§ Mr. SPEAKERI will first hear the reply.
§ Mr. BURNSThere has been no traffic on this canal for several years past, and it was stated in the Report of the Royal Commission on Canals that the banks are dilapidated, and that its stagnant condition makes it offensive to the people of Swindon and Abingdon. The opposition to the closing of the canal is understood to proceed mostly from the adjoining landowners, who are not satisfied with the proposals of the Bill relating to the continuance of a water supply for agricultural purposes. This is a matter which will, 1591 no doubt, receive due consideration by any Committees to which the Bill may be referred.
