HC Deb 17 February 1914 vol 58 cc763-4
39. Sir GEORGE YOUNGER

asked the Secretary for Scotland the date upon which the Report of the Departmental Committee on Scottish Fisheries was signed; and when it was handed to the printers?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The Report was signed in proof on the 8th January, and the necessary steps were at once taken for its being printed off and circulated. I am informed that publication may be expected within the next week.

Sir G. YOUNGER

When did the Committee last meet?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I do not know.

40. Sir GEORGE YOUNGER

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether, in view of the complaints by drift-net fishermen of the interference with their industry by trawling for herring with nets of small mesh by steam trawlers, it is intended to take any administrative steps for their protection?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

As the hon. Baronet is aware, the question of trawling for herrings is at present being considered by an Interdepartmental Committee presided over by my right hon. Friend the Postmaster-General. I propose to defer any statement till the Committee reports.

Sir G. YOUNGER

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us any idea when we are likely to have that Report?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

No; I think that question had better be addressed to my right hon. Friend.
