§ 9. Mr. NEWMANasked the Chief Secretary whether, outside the Ulster Volunteer Force, there are bodies of citizens being drilled and disciplined on military methods in other parts of Ireland; and, if so, whether he has any information as to the reasons which have led to their enrolment?
§ Mr. BIRRELLI am aware that outside the Ulster Volunteer Force there is a movement on foot to organise a body on similar lines to be known as the Irish National Volunteers. I have no information as to the reasons which actuate the organisers of this movement beyond what has appeared in the Press.
§ Lord ROBERT CECILCan the right hon. Gentleman say to what extent the movement has been organised, and in what parts of Ireland?
§ Mr. BIRRELLI have had various reports from Galway and one or two other places, but it is very difficult for me to express any opinion as to how far the movement is meeting with success.
§ Mr. NEWMANIs it not a fact that there is a movement in the city of Dublin as well?
§ Mr. BIRRELLI cannot say what movements are on foot; I can only speak about them when they exhibit themselves in overt action.
§ Mr. NEWMANAre not men being drilled in Dublin under the direction of Captain White?
§ Mr. BIRRELLI believe that is so.
