Mr. ROBERT THOMPSONasked the UNDER-SECRETARY for War whether men who have formerly served in the forces who now re-enlist will receive only recruits' pay or be paid at the same rate as when they previously served; and is he aware that on this answer depends whether a large number of trained men rejoin the Service?
Mr. BAKERMen with previous service are paid the pay of the rank in which they are appointed to serve on re-enlistment. They enlist in the first place as privates but may be selected immediately for promotion to non-commissioned rank, and in that case they get the pay of that rank.
