HC Deb 04 August 1914 vol 65 c1900
27. Mr. FIELD

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether he will consider the advisability of appointing the proposed Committee as promised to inquire into and report upon the unsatisfactory conditions prevailing in the live stock trade between Great Britain and Ireland, with a view to enable the business to be carried on with advantage and safety in the interest of both countries?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I cannot make any further statement on this subject at present.

Mr. CRUMLEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the question of reducing the period of detention?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

That is dealt with in the answer to the next question.

28. Mr. FIELD

asked what further relaxations regulating the importation of live-stock from Ireland into Great Britain have been arranged; whether Irish fat or store animals will be allowed facility of transit to markets or grazing land; and whether the period of detention will be reduced?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

An order has been made to-day, to come into operation at midnight to-morrow, under which animals from any port of Ireland, except the scheduled area, will be allowed, after four days' detention at a landing-place in Great Britain, to be moved by licence to specified premises, there to be kept under observation for fourteen days unless slaughtered in the meantime.
