HC Deb 27 April 1914 vol 61 cc1310-1
16. Mr. SAMUEL ROBERTS

asked the President of the Board of Education-whether, in view of increasing danger of the streets arising from motor and tramway traffic, he will consider the advisability of suggesting to local education authorities the desirability of their giving directions to teachers in elementary schools to instruct the children in the rules of the road, and especially as to the danger of crossing the road without first looking in both directions?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. J. A. Pease)

I am informed that it is not uncommon for school children to receive from teachers instructions of the kind mentioned by the hon. Member, and posters in regard to the danger on the roads are also exhibited in a number of schools. The need for caution on the roads is so well known to local education authorities and teachers that I do not think any circular from me is required to emphasise the importance of the matter to which the hon. Member refers.
