16. Mr. NEWMAN

asked the Chief Secretary whether he has now been able to communicate with the Inspector-General of the Royal Irish Constabulary and ascertain whether a strengthening of the police force in the province of Ulster was carried out between the 1st and 21st day of last month; and, if so, will he give the number of constables that were despatched to Ulster and the stations or, if preferred, the counties from which they were drawn?

Mr. BIRRELL

There was no strengthening of the police force in the province of Ulster during the period mentioned.
