HC Deb 21 April 1914 vol 61 cc749-50
30. Mr. CROFT

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the value of exports per head of population in 1913 from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and Holland?

Mr. ROBERTSON

The value of exports per head of population in 1913 from the United Kingdom was £11 8s. 3d.; from Switzerland, £14 3s. 3d.; from Australia, £15, or, including bullion and specie, £15 12s. 10d. The value per head of exports from Belgium was £18 14s. 6d., but this figure includes a certain amount of non-Belgian goods. Figures for New Zealand are not available for 1913, but in 1912 the value of exports per head was £19 2s. 6d. In the case of the Netherlands the values assigned to exports are official values, which have remained unchanged for a long period and bear little relation to present prices. The result is to exaggerate greatly the apparent value of Netherland exports, which are also swollen by a large amount of goods not of native production. On the above basis the nominal value of the exports from the Netherlands amounted in 1912 to £42 3s. 11d. per head of population.
