HC Deb 21 April 1914 vol 61 c759
69. Mr. ARTHUR HENDERSON

asked the Chief Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the case of Thomas Daly, who was recently sentenced to two years' and one year's imprisonment, both sentences to run concurrently, for assaults on two strike-breakers; whether he is aware that Daly had previously stood his trial on a charge of murder and was found not guilty; and whether, in view of the ordeal through which Daly has passed and of the fact that his employer testified to his being a sober, honest, and hardworking man, he will consider the advisability of having at least a portion of the sentence remitted?

Mr. BIRRELL

My attention has been called to this ease. The facts are as stated. The exercise of the prerogative of mercy is a matter entirely for the Lord Lieutenant, who I am sure will consider carefully any representations made to him on behalf of the prisoner.
