HC Deb 20 April 1914 vol 61 c575
35. Mr. CATHCART WASON

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he has considered the dispatch of the Governor of Uganda, Sir F. J. Jackson, in which he states that all the European graves are well cared for, and that in no case are relatives or friends, unless they so desire, obliged to contribute to their upkeep; and if he will give definite assurance that European graves in East Africa will be similarly well cared for, in view of the fact that so many of the graves are of those who have laid down their lives in the service of the country?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Harcourt)

I will communicate with the Governor of the East Africa Protectorate on the subject with a view to ascertaining whether the arrangements for the care of cemeteries and graves are adequate and fitting.

Mr. CATHCART WASON

Will not the right hon. Gentleman provide that the graves in South Africa should be looked after by the Government and not by private individuals, as they are at the present time?

Mr. HARCOURT

I will consider the whole question when I have made the communication and received an answer.
