HC Deb 20 April 1914 vol 61 cc566-7
15. Mr. KELLY

asked the Postmaster-General the reasons for abandoning the late current magazine post rate of 1d. per pound on British periodicals posted to Canada and increasing it to a practically prohibitive figure; whether, as stated by the Canadian Postmaster-General in the House of Commons, Ottawa, the Dominion Government has done everything in its power to foster the circulation in Canada of British periodicals, but that the Imperial postal authorities have shown little sympathy or interest in the scheme; whether he had in view the benefits conferred by the cheaper rate on people in these countries wishing to keep in touch with friends and relations in Canada; and whether there is any prospect of this matter being settled between the postal authorities so as to restore to the public the facilities which had been extended to them?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The special postage rate of 1d. per pound on British newspapers, magazines and trade journals sent from the United Kingdom to Canada has not been withdrawn. I would refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer given to similar questions on the 6th instant. I have nothing to add to these answers at present.
