HC Deb 08 April 1914 vol 60 cc1953-4
10. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether a young European lady, Miss Beasley, was lately the subject of an unprovoked and violent assault by a Bengali youth, while sitting upon a bench in the Maidan, in Calcutta, in one of the most frequented parts of that public park, with a companion of her own sex; and whether any arrest has been made in connection with this outrage?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. C. Roberts)

The Secretary of State regrets to observe a newspaper report to this effect, from which it appears that the assailant escaped. I was not given sufficient notice of the hon. Member's question to obtain official confirmation, but inquiry is being made.
