HC Deb 06 April 1914 vol 60 c1605
45. Dr. CHAPPLE

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the inconvenience arising from the rule which requiries a Member to seek re-election upon his acceptance of an office of profit under the Crown, he will give facilities to the Bill introduced by the hon. Member for Falkirk Burghs providing it is made to apply only to succeeding Parliaments?

Mr. McKENNA

Unless the Bill meets with general acceptance in all quarters of the House, I fear I cannot promise facilities.

Dr. CHAPPLE

Would the right hon. Gentleman approach the Opposition with a view to making that an agreed measure on the condition that it will not apply in this Parliament, but to subsequent Parliaments?

Mr. McKENNA

I will certainly consider that point.

Mr. WATT

Is this not one of the rights of the people that they are to be deprived of?

Mr. McKENNA

I will consider that point also.
