asked the President of the Board of Agriculture how much has been expended out of the Development Fund on the encouragement of the growth of tobacco and the growth of sugar beet in the United Kingdom during each of the last three years?

Mr. MONTAGU

No sums were issued out of the Development Fund for the purposes referred to before the financial year 1913–14. In that year the following sums were issued:

  • Tobacco-growing in Great Britain, £5,700.
  • Tobacco-growing in Ireland, £2,500.
  • The organisation and instruction of farmers in the growth of sugar-beet in England, £11,000.
