HC Deb 20 March 1913 vol 50 cc1189-90
19. Mr. LEACH

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of bales of cotton produced in the Sudan in 1908 and 1912, respectively?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. Robertson)

No official particulars of the cotton crop of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan are available for the years in question, but the quantity of ginned and unginned cotton exported in 1908 was 70,034 cwts., and in 1911, 103,314 cwts. The figures for 1912 as a whole are not yet available, but the exports in the first nine months of the year amounted to 91,652 cwts.

20. Mr. LEACH

asked the number of square miles comprised in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan; how many miles of railroad there are in the area; and how many miles of waterways?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir Edward Grey)

I have no official information, but it is stated in a book of reference that the total area of the Sudan is 984,520 square miles, and that about 1,500 miles of railways were opened for traffic in 1912. There is no information respecting the mileage of the waterways.
