HC Deb 23 June 1913 vol 54 cc790-1
45. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Prime Minister whether he proposes to make Surrey, Hertfordshire, Essex, and Kent liable to provide jurymen for the High and Central Criminal Courts in like manner with Middlesex, which alone of counties, other than London, is now obnoxious to this obligation; and, if not, whether any and, if so, what steps will be taken to relieve the last-named county from an exceptional and accidental burden?

Mr. McKENNA

The Prime Minister has asked me to reply to this question. When an opportunity for legislating on the subject of the jury laws can be found, the question of the area from which jurors may be drawn for the High and Central Criminal Courts will require careful consideration, but I cannot at present say anything with regard to the decision that will be arrived at.

Mr. SWIFT MacNEILL

What is the meaning of the words "obnoxious to this obligation"?

Mr. McKENNA

My hon. Friend had better consult the hon. Member who put the question.
