§ 56. Sir J. D. REESasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether His Majesty's Government is bound to observe the conditions of the Pekin and Angl-oRussian Conventions by transacting diplomatic business with Tibet through the agency of the Chinese Republic, the suzerainty of China having practically ceased with the fall of the Manchu Empire, or whether it is proposed to recognise actual facts and to appoint a British representative at Lhassa?
§ Mr. MONTAGUThe status of Tibet is now the subject of negotiations between His Majesty's Government and the Governments of that country and of China, and the Secretary of State for India is therefore unable to make any statement on the subject.
