HC Deb 18 June 1913 vol 54 cc378-9
62. Mr. CHARLES BATH URST

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether it is proposed to fill the vacancy on the Road Board occasioned by the death of Sir Charles Rose; and if so, whom it is proposed to appoint in his place?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, but I fear I am not at present in a position to make any further statement on the matter.

Mr. C. BATHURST

Following precedent, if it is proposed to appoint a Liberal Member of Parliament to this post, will the right hon. Gentleman select somebody who is well acquainted with local government?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I should not think that being a Liberal Member of Parliament is necessarily a disqualification. I know of no name at present before the Treasury.

Mr. C. BATHURST

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that the appointment of a Liberal Member of Parliament, assuming he knows something about local government, would be acceptable to this side of the House?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I am afraid that I misunderstood the hon. Member's question. I will bear in mind what he says.
