HC Deb 18 June 1913 vol 54 cc372-3
50. Mr. WEDGWOOD

asked whether, in order to suppress strike riots, county police have been taught to use arms; whether rifles and ball cartridges have been now issued to them by the War Office; and whether any correspondence or suggestions on the subject have passed between the Home Office and War Office?

Mr. McKENNA

There is no intention of supplying the police with, or of training them to use, firearms for the purpose of suppressing strike riots.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman to reply to the last part of the question, whether any correspondence or suggestions on the subject have passed between the Home Office and the War Office And further, whether his attention has been called to the "Daily Express" of 15th May, which gave a categorical statement that such arrangements have been made?

Mr. McKENNA

No, Sir. My attention has not been called to the "Daily Express." I can add nothing to the answer I have given.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

Has there been any correspondence between the Home Office and the War Office on the subject?

Mr. McKENNA

No correspondence between the War Office and the Home Office as to the use of policemen in strikes.
