HC Deb 09 June 1913 vol 53 cc1260-1
67. Mr. CAMPION

asked the Home Secretary the total amount spent on police and the maintenance of police stations in England and Wales for the last financial year for which the figures are available; what portion of this amount was paid out of the National Exchequer; and what portion out of local rates?

Mr. McKENNA

It appears from the tables published with the constabulary inspectors' reports that, excluding pay- ments by one police authority to another for extra police borrowed on special occasions, but including the cost of superannuation, the gross total expenditure for the year ended 31st March, 1912, was £7,401,523. Towards this amount £2,601, 767 was received from the Exchequer Contribution Account, and in addition £91,744 was credited by local authorities to police funds out of the moneys received under the Agricultural Rates Act. The total amount defrayed from the rates was £3,855,797. The balance of the expenditure was paid out of the sums received for constables lent by one police authority to another, the various contributions to the pension fund, and other miscellaneous receipts.
