§ 43. Mr. CAMPIONasked what was the total amount spent on the upkeep of main roads in England and Wales for the last financial year for which the figures are available; what portion of this amount was paid out of the National Exchequer; and what portion out of local rates?
§ Mr. BURNSThe amount expended in respect of main roads by county councils in the year 1910–11 was £3,069,000, exclusive of expenditure met out of loans. There is no specific Grant from the Exchequer in aid of this expenditure, nor is there a separate rate for it. An estimate, made in connection with the Local Taxation Returns, gives £836,000 as having been defrayed in that year out of Exchequer Grants, £2,026,000 out of rates, and the balance from other sources.
