HC Deb 09 June 1913 vol 53 c1243
43. Mr. CAMPION

asked what was the total amount spent on the upkeep of main roads in England and Wales for the last financial year for which the figures are available; what portion of this amount was paid out of the National Exchequer; and what portion out of local rates?

Mr. BURNS

The amount expended in respect of main roads by county councils in the year 1910–11 was £3,069,000, exclusive of expenditure met out of loans. There is no specific Grant from the Exchequer in aid of this expenditure, nor is there a separate rate for it. An estimate, made in connection with the Local Taxation Returns, gives £836,000 as having been defrayed in that year out of Exchequer Grants, £2,026,000 out of rates, and the balance from other sources.
