HC Deb 17 July 1913 vol 55 cc1420-1
45. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether any opportunity will arise before the end of this Session when the House can discuss the Report of the Royal Commission on the London University; and whether he can give an assurance that no site will be acquired for the university unless and until the approval of this House is signified on the proposal?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I know of no such opportunity. I am not in a position to give the assurance asked for, since the Government have no present intention of making a Grant towards the acquisition of a new site for the university.

Mr. KING

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware there is a very strong feeling and very wide interest in this question of a site for London University, and can he give some assurance that it will not be prematurely settled by one or two people without the knowledge or consent of the great body of London University graduates?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have said we have no intention at present of making any Grant.

Mr. KING

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman go further and prevent people even without a Grant prejudging and settling this question?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is as much as I can do to control the action of the Government.
