HC Deb 16 January 1913 vol 46 cc2255-6
70. Mr. FELL

asked to whom the 7s. 6d. a week payable in the event of the illness of a female domestic servant who receives from her employer board and lodging and wages will be paid; and, if to the servant in the first instance, will an agreement be necessary to secure the payment of the money to the other servants who may do the work of the invalided servant or to the employer in the event of a substitute having to be engaged to do the work of the invalided servant?

Mr. MASTERMAN

Sickness benefit would in the circumstances stated be payable to the servant. Any payment made by the servant in consideration of being kept in the house during sickness would be a matter of private arrangement between her and her mistress.

Mr. FELL

Will not that plan be very unfair on the other servants who may be doing the work of their fellow servants?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I do not see that they will be any worse off than they are at the present time.
