HC Deb 15 January 1913 vol 46 c2055
24. Mr. WATT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the Uganda railway continues to use as fuel cedar wood from the Government forests there; whether any estimate has been formed by experts as to how long the cedar wood of the world is expected to last; and whether, in face of the short supply of that timber and its low steaming value, he will take any steps to substitute some less valuable wood for railway purposes?

Mr. HARCOURT

I am unable to say whether cedar wood is now used as fuel by the Uganda railway, but I will make inquiry of the Governor of the Protectorate on the subject. The cedar referred to is, in fact, a juniper, but not that variety which forms the basis of gin.

Mr. CATHCART WASON

Arising out of that question, can the right hon. Gentleman say whether there has been any further development with regard to coal in that region?

Mr. HARCOURT

I do not think it can be said that coal arises out of cedar.
