HC Deb 04 February 1913 vol 47 c1967
13. Mr. HUNT

asked how many miles, roughly, General Bethune has travelled and how many meetings he has addressed on his tour for obtaining Territorial recruits; and whether he can say how much money the tour cost, and what was the number of recruits obtained?

Colonel SEELY

General Bethune has visited about sixty places and attended about a hundred meetings, but it is not practicable to estimate the mileage covered. The cost of the tours to the public may be taken as about £125. The number of recruits taken in Great Britain during the period of his tour was 11,069, and the number of re-engagements was 3,639, as compared with 7,929 and 2,088 in the corresponding period of the year 1911.

Mr. HUNT

Were the increased numbers considered to be the result of General Bethune's tour?

Colonel SEELY

Well! The facts I have stated coincided with the tour. I cannot say more.
