32. Mr. F. HALLasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of the cost of new ships for the Navy and of old age pensions, incurred in the year 1910, was met from the proceeds of the taxes on land and property levied under the Finance (1909–10) Act, 1910; and if he will give the same information as regards the years 1911 and 1912?
§ The CHANCELLOR of the EX-CHEQUER (Mr. Lloyd George)The yield of the taxes in question has already been given to the House, and I must leave the hon. Member to make his own calculations.
Mr. F. HALLMay I ask whether the right hon. Gentleman has overlooked the speeches he made in August and September, 1909, in which he defended those discredited taxes on the assumption that in 1910 and subsequent years they Would be largely paying for old age pensions and to provide battleships?
§ Mr. LLOYD GEORGECertainly, £455,000 was provided last year.
Mr. F. HALLMay I ask whether anything has been derived for the present, year from the payment of those?
§ Mr. LLOYD GEORGECertainly, if the hon. Gentleman will look at the revenue returns he will find that is so.
