Sir JOHN SPEARasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that a number of petitions have been addressed to the Secretary of State through the ordinary channels from members of the various Indian education services against the proposed appointment of an outsider to the headship of the Bengal service; and whether any decision on the subject has yet been arrived at by the Government?
§ Mr. MONTAGUThe Secretary of State has received the memorials referred to. The appointment to which they relate has been made in the circumstances described in the explanation published by the Government of Bengal, a copy of which I shall be glad to send to my hon. Friend.
