HC Deb 28 April 1913 vol 52 cc792-3
36. Mr. O'GRADY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Dumbarton Labour Exchange officials have been sending men to a firm, known as the Wet Carbonising Company, Dumfries, who have works in course of construction and where a strike of workmen exists, stating to the men who agreed to go that there was no strike; and whether, in the circumstances, the Board of Trade will take steps to see that the men's return fares and their out-of-pocket expenses are paid?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I understand that the only men sent by the Dumbarton Labour Exchange through the Dumfries Labour Exchange to the Wet Carbonising Company were rivetters, and that the strike in progress at the works in question only affected fitters and labourers and did not affect the rivetters, who were, in fact, at work all the time it lasted. In the circumstances, the point raised in the last portion of my hon. Friend's question does not arise.
