HC Deb 23 October 1912 vol 42 cc2172-3
27. Sir HILDRED CARLILE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that at the office of the Special Commissioners of Income Tax, 49, Welling-ton Street, Strand, typists have access to the figures contained in the especially confidential returns of gross income made to the Special Commissioners of Income Tax for the purpose of the assessment of Supertax, and also to the names of persons making such returns; and whether he will undertake to see that this is discontinued?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The whole of the clerical work in the Special Commissioners' office, including the typing, is performed exclusively by established officers who have taken the oath of secrecy. In these circumstances I do not think it necessary to make special arrangements to prevent the ladies who do the typing having access, in common with the remainder of the staff, to information of a confidential nature.

Sir G. PARKER

Could not the right hon. Gentleman use numbers instead of names to represent the people concerned?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

That appears to be a very sensible suggestion.
