HC Deb 17 October 1912 vol 42 c1413
59. Mr. GOLDSMITH

asked whether a design for the refacing of Buckingham Palace has been adopted; and, if so, whether such design was selected by means of an open competition?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)

Although the refacing of the Palace will not be paid for out of public funds, the Office of Works retains full control over the design and work. Sir Aston Webb was the architect selected, after competition, for the Queen Victoria Memorial.

Captain MURRAY

Can the hon. Gentleman say when this work is likely to be commenced?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

No, Sir, I cannot say exactly, but without much delay.

Mr. GOLDSMITH

Will the design be published?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

The First Commissioner has already promised to exhibit the picture in the Tea Room.

Sir ARTHUR MARKHAM

May I ask whether, in view of the fact that this House is built of stone from Mansfield, the hon. Gentleman will represent the advisability of using the same stone?
