HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 cc822-3
77. Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received a resolution from the Kirkcaldy and District Trades and Labour Council deploring the loss of lives caused by the wreck of the "Shernudon" and the "North Briton," both caused in consequence of the raising of the Plimsoll load line; if his attention has been called to the jury's finding in the case of the "North Briton" shipwreck; and if he intends restoring the load line to its original position, with a view of minimising the loss of lives at sea?

Mr. BUXTON

I have received the resolution mentioned by my hon. Friend. As regards the "North Briton," I have already stated in this House that the finding of the Court of Inquiry into the loss of that ship is engaging my careful attention in connection with the question of the 1905–6 revision of the load-line tables. As regards the other ship, the "Shernudon," I am asking the Kirkcaldy and District Trades and Labour Council to furnish me with particulars of the case referred to, as the Board of Trade have no record of any British vessel of this name.
