HC Deb 21 November 1912 vol 44 cc463-4
40. Sir WALTER NUGENT

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) whether he is aware that the Mulliugar town area has been free from any outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease for over three weeks, and that the only case that has occurred outside the town area was about one mile south-east of it; whether he is aware that the officers of his Department have made a careful examination of all livestock within a wide radius of the town without finding any traces of the disease; and if, having regard to all those circumstances, he will consider the advisability of the contraction of the present fifteen miles radius in so far any way as it extends in the direction of that part of the country in which no affection or trace of the disease has at any time appeared?

Mr. BIRRELL

Cases of foot-and-mouth disease occurred in the Mullingar district on the 5th and 7th instant, respectively. The case on the 5th instant was discovered at Catherinestown, about two miles from the town, by the Department inspectors in the course of their inspections in the surrounding district. The case on the 7th occurred at Lynn, near the town. The Department are advised that in the circumstances it would be too soon to curtail the limits of the scheduled area.
