HC Deb 20 November 1912 vol 44 c290
50. Mr. FELL

asked if the right hon. Gentleman proposes to bring the Session to a close before Christmas or the New Year?

The PRIME MINISTER

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. FELL

May I ask the Prime Minister if for the last nineteen years the Session has ever been extended beyond Christmas on any occasion?

The PRIME MINISTER

I do not know why the hon. Member chooses the number nineteen. I remember in the year 1893–4 it was.

Mr. NEWMAN

When shall we adjourn for the Christmas Recess?

The PRIME MINISTER

That is rather premature.

Mr. WATT

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that Scotch Members do not sit here on New Year's Day?

Mr. FELL

Is it not the case that in 1893, to which the right hon. Gentleman referred, the House of Commons adjourned during January while the matter was being considered in the House of Lords?

The PRIME MINISTER

Yes. They sat on New Year's Day, and adjourned.
