HC Deb 20 November 1912 vol 44 c277
32. Mr. KING

asked whether it has been decided to adopt the Italian Renaissance style of architecture for the official buildings at Delhi; and whether the adoption of an Indian style of architecture, as more consonant with the traditions, craftsman ship, and climate of India, has been or will be considered?

Mr. H. BAKER

The answer to the first question is in the negative. No decision will be taken without giving full weight to the considerations mentioned by my hon. Friend.

Mr. KING

Will the House be allowed an opportunity of criticising the decision, or at any rate of discussing the matter before it is decided?

Mr. BAKER

I am afraid it is not for me to answer that.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Has the design been submitted to the Government of India in Council?

Mr. BAKER

Will the hon. Member kindly give me notice of that question.

33. Mr. KING

asked the Under-Secretary for India when he expects the Report of the Town Planning Committee which is considering the building of the new Delhi; and whether this Committee will report on the style of architecture to be adopted?

Mr. H. BAKER

The Committee will reassemble in India next month, and will report after the inquiry, which is expected to take about two months, has been completed. The question of the style of architecture is outside the scope of the Committee's inquiry.
