HC Deb 19 November 1912 vol 44 cc106-7
15. Sir JOHN JARDINE

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether, as a cause of the decrease of the rural population of the county of Roxburgh, his attention has been drawn to the increase in the number of led-farms, whereby several, and sometimes many, farms are let to one tenant farmer; if he can state the number of led-farms in the county and the number of tenant farmers working them; and what measures, if any, he can see his way to use under the circumstances?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

In view of my hon. Friend's question, I have made inquiry into the matter, and am informed that there are not any statistics available as to the number of led-farms in Roxburghshire or the number of tenant farmers working them. In answer to the last part of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I have given to his last question.

Captain MURRAY

There are no statistics available?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

No, Sir, that was my answer.

Mr. KING

Will the right hon. Gentleman, for the benefit of English Members, say what a led-farm is?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

A led-farm is a farm which is cultivated by a farmer who lives upon another farm.
