HC Deb 19 November 1912 vol 44 cc103-4
30. Mr. BOLAND

asked the Chief Secretary how many sergeants and constables, respectively, are stationed at Derriana; what is the nature of the duty they are called upon to perform; for how many months in the year are they so employed; at whose instance were they stationed there; and can he state what is the cost to the public funds in each year during which they have been so employed?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Inspector-General informs me that one sergeant and four constables are stationed at Derriana. Their duty is to protect the water-bailiffs specially appointed to preserve the spawning salmon in the river Comeragh. They are employed for two months in each year at the request of the Conservators of the Waterville Fishery District, who provide them with accommodation rent free. The extra cost to the public in each year is about £12, none of which falls upon the local rates.
