HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 cc840-1
78. Mr. WALTER GUINNESS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that abatements on the Income Tax of married women are only allowed by the Inland Revenue to the husband, even in cases where the latter has no income of his own; and whether he will consider an amendment of the law so as to enable married women to recover on their own behalf?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Lloyd George)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part, such an amendment as is suggested by the hon. Member would involve very considerable changes and adjustments in the Income Tax law, and I cannot at present undertake to propose it.

Mr. WALTER GUINNESS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that many letters have been received from married women to the effect that they can only get their Income Tax back by forging their husband's signatures and opening their letters, as otherwise the husband will keep the money?
