HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 c837
70. Mr. BURGOYNE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how much money it is now proposed to spend before 31stMarch, 1913, on the armoured ships of the current programme, stating the sum in each case; and whether he has any confidence in the power of the private builders tendering for the ships to be built by contract to comply with the time limits imposed by the specifications?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The following is the estimated expenditure before 31st March, 1913:—

Battleships. £
No. 1, Portsmouth 242,270
No. 2, Devonport 247,970
No. 3, Contract built 59,170
No. 4. Contract built 60,125
Apart from causes of delay, which neither the firms nor the Admiralty can control, the firms who have been invited to tender for the work are capable of carrying it out in the allotted time.
