HC Deb 16 May 1912 vol 38 c1278
Mr. WORTHINGTON - EVANS

asked whether it is intended by regulations or otherwise to compel trade unions to lodge schemes for the disposal of any accumulation of contributions paid for sick benefits in cases analogous to those dealt with in Section 72, or whether trade unions are allowed to divert such funds to other purposes?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The funds of trade unions have not, like those of friendly societies which are dealt with in Section 72 of the Insurance Act, been accumulated solely for the purpose of providing benefits similar to those of the Act. Neither the Act, nor regulations made under it, will interfere with the rules (or the method of amending those rules) which now govern the disposal of the funds that have been accumulated by trade unions.

Mr. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

If there are any accumulations of sick funds can they be used for this purpose?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I think that depends on the rules of the trade union itself.
