HC Deb 14 May 1912 vol 38 cc965-6
Mr. PETO

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the report of the Norwegian steamer "Randaree" that a dangerous derelict, namely, a landing-stage submerged with only an iron girder bridge showing above water, lies 190 miles from the English coast in the North Sea in the track of shipping; and whether, in view of the frequent occurrence of derelicts around the British coast, and the consequent danger to British shipping, he will now consider the advisability of providing one or more derelict destroyers?

Mr. ROBERTSON

The Board of Trade received and published reports of this derelict, which, being 200 miles east of the Firth of Forth, was outside the area within which the General Lighthouse Authorities exercise their powers of removal. As to the last part of the question, I would refer to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave yesterday to the hon. Member for the St. Augustine's Division of Kent, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy.

Major ARCHER-SHEE

Will the hon. Member arrange with the First Lord of the Admiralty to send a cruiser to destroy this derelict, which is right in the path of shipping?

Mr. ROBERTSON

That question should be addressed to the First Lord of the Admiralty.
